Direct and Indirect Speech
(Question Statement)
This morning i studied English about question statement of direct and indirect speech. My lecture, Inayanti expalined it that both of them were different.
For example :
1. Tom said to me, "Are you hungry?"
The answer is Tom asked me if i was hungry. Or Tom asked me whether i was hungry.
(In this statement, we must change the tenses of simple present tense to simple past tense. So we use "was" to change from "are". Then to ask the question we must use "if" or "whether" too. Why ?
Because in this question statement, we just answer yes or no.)
Different with this example :
2. Sam said to me, "Where do you live?"
The answer is Sam asked me where i lived.
(In this statement, we must change the tenses like previous example. Then it's not necessary to use "if" or "whether". Why? Because this question statement for asking information and no change in the modals like who, what, when, where, why, how.)
We have known about the different of them. So we must be careful to answer the question statement of direct and indirect speech.
The important thing of the different of them is in direct speech there is a quote mark.
In positive statement, it must be changed to past too. But to conjuction the statement, don't forget to use "that".
I had explained the teori. I wish it can help them who get the difficulties in that teori. Learn it slowly! Try and good luck :)
